Video Games That Would Make Awesome TV Shows

5) Undertale

The fantastic narrative driven linear story where you play a boy trapped in a monster infested underworld controlled by an 'Evil' human child killing monster, the boy has to traverse his way through a strange snow covered land with weird and wonderful creatures appearing at every turn,  No character in this game is 2 dimensional as the graphics might suggest, each one of them have layers, back stories and relationships that deserve a whole series to allow time for these characters to naturally develop.  The graphics are intentionally old fashioned and it reminds you that you don't need all of the bells and whistles to make a fantastic game when you have a story that more than covers it!

Story

Frisk, a boy from a human village is trapped when he falls into a cave system beneath a mountain, this Underground world is populated by monsters who were banished there following a war with the humans, Frisk has to make his way through the Underground to the Castle of Asgore, King of the monsters which stands in the way of the only path back to the surface.

Casting

Noah Schnapp as Frisk

Schnapp has proved his worth on Netflix's fantastic 80's driven nostalgia fest that is Stranger Things as the unluckiest kid in the universe Will Byers but he has also cut his teeth on the silver screen lending his voice to Charlie Brown in the fantastic update of a kids classic, The Peanuts Movie.

Sally Field as Toriel
Sally Field is best known for roles in Steel Magnolias, Mrs Doubtfire, Homeward Bound, Forrest Gump, Lincoln and of course as Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, i think would fit perfectly for the role of Toriel, the big hearted Goat mom you encounter at the beginning of the journey, who teaches you patience and mercy.

Mark Hamill as Flowey
Is there any role that this guy can't play?  as well as being everyone's favorite Jedi Luke Skywalker, he has appeared regularly in both incarnations of The Flash as The Trickster, he has also provided his voice for many years throughout the DC Animated universe as one of the best incarnations of The Joker ever, he has also been the voice of Skips in Regular Show.  Hamill is versatile, intense and really funny, perfect for the role of Flowey.

Sean Astin as Sans
As Sans is a companion character the Frisk, who appears throughout the game to offer that moral support, hints, tips and plenty of jokes who better to play him than the ultimate movie companion, Samwise from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Sean Astin!

David Tennant as Papyrus
Tennant has proved there is life after a cult TV show by appearing in literally everything!  As well as playing the iconic Doctor in Dr Who, he has played Hardy on Broadchurch, The Fugitoid in the Nick version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Scrooge McDuck in the reboot of Ducktails and of Course one of the best Marvel MCU villains (in the top 5) as Killgrave in Jessica Jones (check the show out if you haven't already) he would be perfect for the uptight yet bumbling Papyrus

Aubrey Plaza as Undyne
Undyne, is the manically obsessed soldier desperately trying to bring you to justice at any cost, who better for a role in a movie like this then someone who can seamlessly mix drama and comedy, Plaza is best known for playing April in Parks and Recreation but for me she has been at her best in Fox's X-Men spin off show Legion as Lenny, funny, macabre at times disturbing but always compelling, Plaza has proved one of the best parts of that show!

Tara Strong as Alphys
For some of you she may not be the most well known of Actresses but Strong has voiced some prolific characters in her career appearing as Celeste on Babar, Bubbles in The Powerpuff Girls, Dill Pickles in Rugrats, Ben Tennyson in the Ben 10 series, Truffles in Chowder, Mary Jane Watson in The Ultimate Spider-Man TV Show, Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony, Penny in the Inspector Gadget reboot, Timmy Turner in Fairly Odd Parents as well as a whole host of other shows like The Raccoons, Beetlejuice, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures, Little Shop, X-Men, Teen Titans, Codename: Kids Next Door, Danny Phantom, Kim Possible, Drawn Together, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Transformers: Animated, Pound Puppies, Family Guy, The Penguins of Madagascar, Samurai Jack, Guardians Of the Galaxy, The Adventures of Rocky And Bulllwinkle but will be most known for her numerous roles in the DC Animated universe and video game properties, the nervous timid Alphys would be perfect for Strong.

Sir Patrick Stewart as Asgore
What can we say here?  For the big bad, we need someone with gravitas and a voice like velvet chocolate and who better than one of the coolest people on the planet Sir Patrick Stewart most well known for portraying two cult characters, Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, DS9 and 4 movies and also Professor Charles Xavier across the X-Men movie franchise i can't think of anyone else i would want for the role!

How

it would be easy to use computer generation or straight animation for the adaption but for me the only way forward would be with the use animatronics and Jim Henson puppetry, there needs to be something tangible on screen as CGI just leaves me cold. The TV show would have the aesthetics of the movie Labyrinth, obviously modernized with current tech

4) Until Dawn

A narrative driven game with light gameplay and just huge levels of quick time events, but regardless a very fun, call back to 80's horror movies both slasher and monster, this show could play out in similar fashion to American Horror Story, Scream or Scream Queens, with an undercurrent of dark humour

Story

Whilst partying at a remote cabin a group of friends suffer a tragedy whilst pulling a prank on one of their friends, a year later the friends return to the Cabin on the anniversary of the incident and find themselves at the mercy of a serial killer, and something more sinister.

Casting

we're in a situation here where through the wonders of motion capture the actors and actresses were able to bring these characters to life, why not bring them back?  if we want to look at suspension of disbelief, set the cabin reunion 4 years in the future instead of 1, letting the cast settle into the ages they are now, hey presto!!!

Hayden Panettiere as Sam

Most famous for playing regenerative cheerleader Claire Bennett in Heroes Panettiere has also made the step up to the big screen appearing in Scream 4, but most recently she can be seen in Country and Western drama, Nashville

Rami Malek as Joshua (voice)

Known mostly for his TV work having appeared in TV shows like, 24, The Pacific and the award winning Mr Robot, but he is making waves on the big screen having starred in the remake of Papillon and he will be appearing as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody

Brett Dalton as Michael (voice)

Dalton will be most recognized as Hydra Agent, Grant Ward and villainous Inhuman Hive in Marvels Agents Of Shield he has also appeared in Milo Murphy's Law for the Disney Channel.

How

It shouldn't be too difficult to get a show like this off of the ground, as for the most part it is a slasher show at heart it can be acheived on a relative low budget, though some creature effects will be needed further down the line, the story has scope to be expanded into future seasons

3) Life is Strange

A beautifully written, moving mystery, centered around a young woman who discovers she has the power to manipulate time and uses it to reconnect with and protect her childhood friend who is attempting to solve the disappearance of the woman she loves.  the story, is gripping, engaging, at times harrowing and genuinely moving it is one of the reasons that should solidify Video Games as a medium recognized not just for graphical innovation but for the quality of its writing,

Story

Max who attends a prestigious photography academy in her home town of Arcadia Bay, falls asleep and sees a huge tornado destroying the town, disturbed by this she goes to the bathroom and stumbles on a murder of a girl by the school bully and the shock causes her to develop the ability to rewind time which she does, the girl turns out to be her childhood best friend Chloe who she had grown apart from.  Revealing to Chloe that she has powers, she persuades Max to use them to find out what happened to her friend who has recently gone missing.

Casting

Natalia Dyer as Max

Dyer is best known for playing Mikes older sister Nancy on the Stranger Things TV show, and I have to say she has been one of the standouts, holding her own on screen in her quest for Justice for Barb, I feel playing Max will give us a side to her acting ability that we haven't seen yet and one i feel she can achieve.

Virginia Gardner as Chloe

Best known for her role as Karolina in Marvels teen angst-fest The Runaways she will also be appearing (for how long, who knows) in the latest (and i have to say impressive looking) Halloween reboot. In The Runaways, Gardner plays an honest, naive and sweet girl who for the most part plays by the rules so portraying Chloe will be completely against type

How

Again relatively low budget and should only be in a shorter form TV show, like an event series, no more than 15 episodes to fully develop the characters and the story, with the possibility of continuing the series depending on where the games sequel takes the story.  Life is Strange has a prequel DLC called Before the Storm which is as brilliantly realized as the main game which could add further content to this concept.

2) Grim Fandango

Okay, what can i say about this game, Grim Fandango is one of my favorite games of all time and proves that with the catalog of games that they had, Disneys dismantling of Lucasarts was a travesty that needs to be rectified straight away,(Disney and Kathleen Kennedy if you are reading this, SORT IT OUT!!!).  Grim Fandango delves into the Mexican Land Of The Dead with a well written, imaginative, dark, and funny story, laced with great memorable characters and a main character that you root for.

Story

The story centers on Manny Calavera a 'travel agent' who ushers the recently deceased through the land of the dead to the afterlife, but when a saintly human named Mercedes 'Meche' Colomar dies, Manny's attempts to get her a seat on the Number 9 train to the underworld that she earned in her great life as a human are hindered by mysterious circumstances, forcing him to embark on a 4 year mission to try and save her.

Casting

Diego Luna as Manny
Most known for the playing Cassian Ando in the first of the Star Wars Spinoff movies Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Luna has also appeared in the remake of Flatliners, animated show Troll Hunters and also in Narcos, I think Luna would be great in the role of Manny, creative, underhand yet vulnerable, with a determination to rectify his past mistakes.
John Goodman as Glottis
Goodman is a legend without a doubt, his voice deep and warm is instantly recognisable he has starred in some memorable properties over the years such as Roseanne (though that ended badly, through no fault of Goodman or the majority of the cast *Cough* Roseanne Barr *cough*), Arachnophobia, King Ralph, Barton Fink, The Flintstones, The Borrowers, Fallen, Blues Brothers 2000, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou, The West Wing, Father of the Pride, Red State, The Artist, Treme, Community, ParaNorman, Argo, Inside Llewyn Davis, Transformers: Age of Extinction, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Kong: Skull Island and of course everyone's favourite giant furry monster James 'Sully' Sillivan in The two Monsters Inc movies!!  his presence not just physically but through his voice would be fantastic for the literal Speed Demon Glottis.

Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Meche
Cordova-Buckley is currently Inhuman superhero Yo-Yo 'Slingshot' Rodriguez in Marvels Agents of Shield who for me is one of the best characters, headstrong, willful and funny but Cordova-Buckley has also appeared in other properties like Bates Motel and the other Day of the Dead property Pixar's Coco, for me her acting ability and gravelly voice are perfect for the role of Manny's love interest Meche

How

A show like this could only be acheived through animation and i'd love to see this realised in the same style as the upcoming Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse movie, the animation is just beautiful in the trailers i have seen so far, bright, colourful and cheerful, exactly what this show would need.

1) The Last Of Us

Grim Fandango may be one of my favorite games of all time but The Last of Us does beat that as a truly cinematic video game experience, it feels like a movie, it looks like a movie and is acted so well you would think it were.  The Last of Us is dark, imposing and scary, as you would expect from a Post Apocalyptic Zombie-esc future but it also had something that i don't think anyone expected, a truly sweet father daughter story as two people who have never met before, bond it is truly a beautiful story.

Story

The Last Of Us is the story of Joel a bitter resentful middle aged man who lost his daughter when the Cordyceps outbreak began 20 years previously, now living under the heel of soldiers in a government controlled 'safe zone' a rebel group called the Fireflies ask him to smuggling a girl across the country safely as she holds the cure to the virus plaguing them.

Casting

Dylan McDermott as Joel
McDermott has appeared in lots of properties over the years such as Hamburger Hill, Steel Magnolias, In The Line Of Fire, Miracle On 34th Street, Dark Blue, The Perks of Being A Wallflower and American Horror Story.  McDermott is no stranger to dark, foreboding roles and through his look alone would make a convincing Joel.

Dafne Keen as Elle
Keen is only 13 years old and stood out in the Hugh Jackman X-Men Swan song Logan, she has proved she can handle huge action set pieces as well as the more dramatic scenes (i defy anyone to keep a dry eye at the closing scene of Logan), i think she would be great for the role of Elle

How

Okay i know that i have mentioned that this could be a movie and there is one in the concept stage as we speak, but i just don't think that a movie or two would do this story justice at all, a longer format would do a better job!  A big budget show on the heels of Game of Thrones and West World, would have fewer episodes through its run (no more than 10-12) allowing for a bigger budget per episode. creature makeup effects to recreate the Runners, Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters, there would also be scope for this to be extended beyond a single season with the sequel coming up more stories are to be told!

And thats the list tell us what you think and let us know any video games that we have missed that would make fantastic TV shows.

See you next time
Stay floaty
