5 Star Trek Concepts that need Their Own Series

The new Star Trek show green lit by CBS was originally envisioned as an anthology series focusing on a completely different story per season, but with the departure of original show runner Bryan Fuller this idea had to evolve, and it did, into the incarnation of Star Trek Discovery that we have now (weird Klingons and all).

Over the last couple of months CBS and Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman have penned a new 5 year deal to produce a number of shows for their Network, including more Star Trek (check out the article from The Hollywood Reporter here), Kurtzman is also contracted to expand the Trek franchise further with more TV shows, mini series and animations for CBS which as a Trek fan like me can only mean good things.  The only issue I have is that for me Discovery looked and felt like the JJ Abrams Kelvin universe Trek (even though we were assured the show was set in the Prime universe (despite the Klingons look!)), which is okay but not fantastic I'd want all of these shows to take place in the Prime universe only!

Below are 5 ideas and concepts from the PRIME UNIVERSE Trek i would like to see expanded on in the upcoming shows on CBS!  (PS please go back to using less CGI  and more model ships and space stations).

5) Starfleet Academy

The Academy is a facility often seen throughout the Star Trek franchise but it's a concept that has never been fully looked into, there have been a few episodes here and there but nothing long form, but the idea of a teen aimed version of the show focusing on a group of new recruits as they sign up for Starfleet and work their way up to their first assignments would be fantastic and give us an insight into what makes a Starfleet officer.  The show could also feature Colm Meaney as Professor of Engineering Miles O'Brien.

4) Section 31

Section 31 are a secret organisation that has existed as long as Starfleet and before the forming of the Federation, it was founded to research technology to protect The Federation, Starfleet and Earth by any means necessary.  This concept has been touched on in numerous shows, for example they used a virus that stopped the Founders from shape shifting in Deep Space 9 and heavily influenced the development and implementation of the Spore Drive in Discovery.  A show based around this super secret organisation, will give fans an insight into the darker side of Starfleet and individuals who will do anything to achieve their goal.  it could be set against the backdrop of the Dominion War or a new conflict but either way could be developed into more than a single season.

3) Ambassador Worf

Worf has always been a fan favorite, ever since he first growled his way onto the bridge of the Enterprise D in Star Trek The Next Generation, his quest to restore his families honour in the eyes of the Klingon Empire following an incident years earlier where his father Mogh was framed for helping Romulan forces attack the Klingon Outpost Khitomer.  Worf has so much more story left to tell and Michael Dorn (who played Worf) has expressed his desire to return with the character.  A political headed show where Worf, now the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire must help prevent a new civil war.  This would be a show exclusively set within the Klingon Empire, giving a more in depth look into the heritage and customs of the Klingons.

2) AR-558

AR-558 is a planet featured in Deep Space 9 and has a very interesting story line based around it, during the Dominion War this planet was used for the largest of the enemies communications arrays,  targeting this facility Starfleet troops drove the enemy forces away so they could use the device to spy on the enemy and help turn the tide of the war.  Over a period of 5 months the outnumbered Starfleet forces attempt to hold off the enemy, the Jem'Hader.  A Star Trek series dedicated entirely to a single conflict, would allow the viewer to get to know the troops protecting this array making them seem less like cannon fodder.  The episode where this incident featured was short and focused heavily on the characters from DS9 but at the start of the siege there were 150 Starfleet personnel based on AR-558 and by the end only 43 remained, is that not a concept that has mini season's worth of story?

1) Colonization

The Federation was built on the desire to explore, learn and understand and yet one aspect of the Federation has not been explored to this day, Colonization of an alien world.  Star Trek has more often than not arrived at planets with colonies already established on their surface but what went into this process, how did they arrive at this planet, settle the first houses, established a society and grow the population, it would provide a pioneer view of the final frontier, the show could follow a family as they and a fleet of other ships settle on an alien world, lay down roots and establish a society, it can fit in anywhere in the Star Trek time line and give a more grounded view of the show.

Foster's mother died of cancer when she was nine years old and her father, worked two jobs in order for her to go to school, he later died from complications from a heart attack.

Foster became a nurse hired by Dr. Donald Blake for his medical practice.  Blake was the human identity used for by the Asgardian, Thor.  Blake fell in love with Foster, who was unaware that he is the God of Thunder.  Blake contemplated revealing his true identity to Jane, However, Odin contacted Thor telepathically and warned him against doing so.

Thor continued to ask Odin to allow him to marry Jane Foster, but the all father refused. However Odin told Thor that should Jane prove herself to be brave, he would make her an immortal.

Blake decided to reveal his identity to Foster, but his father, Odin forbade him to reveal this secret to any mortal. Even though Odin tried for a long time to quash the romance between the two, he ordered her life to be saved when she lay dying following an explosion.


Foster truly loved Blake, and told him that she would not wait forever for him to express how he felt. Thor intended to marry Foster, but Odin forbade him to marry her as she was a mortal.

Erik Selvig

Dr. Erik Selvig is a Danish scientist, and leading expert on the Cosmic Cube working for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Kobik Initiative.  Selvig was asked to run the project following the death of its overseer Dr. Fowler who died following violent merging of the Cosmic Cube into a single being. This being adopted the form and mentality of a young child and was named Kobik, and Selvig became its caretaker.

Selvig was a character created for the movie who subsequently was added into the Marvel comics line.

The main enemies of the Asgardians are the Frost Giants, ruled by Laufey.  The Frost giants live in the area of Jotunheim similar to Earth's polar regions and are vulnerable to heat.  


Odin, the King of Asgard, marched his forces into Jotunheim to battle Laufey and the Giants. Odin faced down Laufey and defeated him, and then adopted Laufey's son Loki as his own son

Odin, King of Asgard, marched the forces of Asgard into Jotunheim to fight the Frost Giants, The next day, after the battle where Odin had defeated Laufey he claimed Laufeys secret son as his own.

Odin's origin is shrouded in mystery.  Odin was presumed to be the son of Bor and a giantess Bestla, who also had three other sons, Cul, Vili and Ve.

Vili, Ve, and Odin journeyed into the realm of the Fire Giant Surtur when they were attacked, fearing they would not escape Vili and Ve sacrificed themselves to help Odin escape Surtur's realm.  as a result Odin's powers grew as his brothers' powers merged with his.

Odin fought a powerful cosmic storm called the God Tempest that threatened Asgard. Odin defeated the God Tempest and sealed it away into a chunk of Uru Metal that he would one day have forged into the mighty hammer Mjolnir for his son Thor.

Asgard is a part of the Nine Worlds and can be accessed by space via ship or using the Bifrost, an inter planetary gateway that connects thw 9 realms which is accessible by a rainbow bridge.

Years later Thor and Sif fell out as Thor travelled to Earth, and fell in love with Jane Foster.  on Thor's return to Asgard he organised a meeting with Sif and they fell in love again.

The Destroyer is an enchanted suit of Armour created by Odin initially to defeat a menace from beyond the stars but since has been used in Odin's Treasure room as a level of security for the more dangerous relics.  The Destroyer has been used by Loki on several occasions to battle Thor coming close to beating him on occasion.

After a failed attempt by the Frost Giants to attack Asgard, Odin felt a strong warrior was needed to guard the rainbow bridge and protect the citizens and held trials with 3 warriors to prove their worth, Agnar the Fierce, Gotron the Agile and Heimdall. Heimdall was eventually chosen as he is able to see and hear across time and predicting any coming attack.

Thor arrives in Jotunheim where he confronts King Laufey.  The encounter erupts into violence but as they fight Loki discovers that the Frost Giant powers do not affect him.

Laufey realizing the fight is not going their way awakens a monster to destroy them.  Thor rescues his friends by smashing through its mouth.

When they return to Asgard, Thor argues with Odin argue about his actions.  Odin angered by Thor's arrogance and warmongering ways, banishes him to Earth and sends Mjolnir after him to wait for a worthy holder.

Thor wakes up having been hit by Fosters car and yells to Odin to return him to Asgard freaked out Darcy tasers him.  As the carry Thor away Mjolnir crashes into the desert.

The next day a couple of friends find Mjolnir buried in the sand in the desert one of the men attempt to move it but a deemed unworthy and can't.

As well as being a prolific writer for TV and the big screen working on 80's kids shows like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, The Real Ghostbusters but Straczynski was also the main writing force behind Babylon 5, having written for the show, all subsequent TV Movies, Video Games and the spin off show Crusade as well as Sense8.  He has also written for the Thor movie Underworld Awakening and World War Z.  Straczynski has also been a writer on the Thor comics

While reviewing the photos taken during the storm Darcy notices the figure of a person as Thor breaks out of the hospital to be run over by Foster again.

While Jane tries to get more information, Thor over hears about a satellite that can't be moved, Thor realizing this is Mjolnir goes to get it back.   Leaving Thor, Foster arrives back at her lab to find Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. taking all of her reasearch.

Sif and the warriors three attempt to petition Loki to allow Thor to return and end his banishment, Loki refuses to allow this

Jane finds Thor trying to commandeer an animal at the local pet shop, Thor explains to Jane that its the Bifrost and the rainbow bridge that she has been researching.

Loki visits Frigga and Odin while he sleeps in the Odin force.  Frigga tries to comfort Loki but he is still angry.

Thor and Foster arrive at the crater to find SHIELD have built a base on top of it, Thor breaks in as Sitwell and Coulson watch on.  Coulson calls in Hawkeye to try and subdue the intruder but Coulson allows Thor to try and pick up his hammer but still deemed unworthy he can't pick it up

Barton grew up working in his father's Butchers shop in Waverly, Iowa with his brother, Barney. Their father was an alcoholic and was abusive beating the brothers.  Barney taught Clint how to improve his aim.

Clint's parents die in a car crash due to his alcoholism.  Clint and Barney escaped from their foster home joining a traveling circus where he practiced his aim further.  In the years that followed Clint would fall out with ethe members of the circus as well as his brother.

Clint became a master archer called "Hawkeye".  Witnessing Iron Man in action, Barton donned a colorful costume and used his archery skills to fight crime.  but in his first outing he was mistaken for a thief, The Black Widow enlisted him as her partner.  Later Hawkeye was unhappy being a criminal and asked the Avengers if he could join, Iron Man sponsored his membership on the team.

Thor is arrested and Held by SHIELD as Loki visits him to tell him that Odin had died placing the blame on Thor.  Selvig frees Thor from custody pretending he is a doctor named Donald Blake.

Loki visits Laufey in Yodenheim where Loki reveals that it was him who let the giants in to the vault to distract people from Thor's coronation and tells Laufey that he will conceal a group of giants into Asgard to kill Odin

When Loki returns to Asgard, Heimdall tells him that he could not see him in Yodenheim and Loki tells him that he is sworn to obey him as king

Sif and the warriors three decide that they have to find Thor even though in doing so they are committing treason.  As they discuss their actions Heimdall calls them to the Bifrost to be opened.

Loki activates The Destroyer and sends him to Earth to kill Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three on earth.  Heimdall confronts Loki and is frozen by the casket of eternal winter

The Destroyer arrives on earth where it is stopped by Coulson and SHIELD believing it to be a suit created by Tony Stark.  Loki activates the Destroyer and it attacks them.

Thor, Foster, Selvig and Darcy evacuate the town as The Destroyer approaches.  Sif and the warriors three attempt to defeat it but fail.  Thor confronts the destroyer himself to try and make Loki stop his attack but it fails and the Destroyer strikes him mortally wounding him.

As Thor sacrifices himself for the town Mjolnir, now considers Thor worthy and flies from its crater.  Thor now fully restored again, quickly dispatches the Destroyer.

Coulson and SHIELD arrive to debrief Thor but he barters for Janes research back.

Thor tries to activates the Bifrost but Heimdall is still frozen, breaking himself free, Heimdall activates the Bifrost to return them home

Thor arrives back as Laufey attempts to kill Odin, but Loki intervenes killing Laufey.  Thor confronts loki before being attack.

Loki attempts to destroy Yodenheim using the Bifrost as Thor tries to stop him.  Thor destroys the rainbow bridge and the power that connects it, causing it to fall into space.  Odin catches Thor and Loki as they dangle over the edge but Loki lets go falling into space.

Trapped on Asgard Thor misses Jane and is distant as the celebration around him is in full swing.

Walt Simonson

Walt Simonson is a prolific Comic Book writer and artist who worked on titles such as Thor, X-Men, Spider-Man, Teen Titans and was the creator of fan favourite Comic Book Character Beta Ray Bill.

Thor and Odin talk about the throne and that he is not ready to take over as of yet.  Thor asks Heimdall if he can see Jane and Heimdall tells him that she looks for him.

Dr Selvig is now working at SHIELD alongside Director Nick Fury.  Fury tells him that his work is impressive and shows him the Tesseract recovered during the search for Captain America, but secretly unknown to Fury Selvig is under the control of Loki who appears to have survived the fall.
