Who was the best Joker? GiS Ranked

Okay disturbing news is a foot!  Warner Brothers and DC have announced that Jared Leto will be getting his own full movie to try and get fans onside after that disastrous appearance in Suicide Squad bearing in mind that this is running alongside the Joker origin story that will star Joaquin Phoenix.  Obviously the Clown Prince  Of Crime is as beloved a character as his heroic counterpart and big business, but who over the years has played him best on screen? Now my top 5 Ranked list below is based on the versions of the character i have seen!  I unfortunately have missed out on several of the Batman animated movies (which i will be watching at some point) and also Cameron Monaghan hasn't expressly been named as The Joker yet in Gotham (we are a little behind the US) so i haven't included him in this instance, so please check out my list below and please recommend which of the Batman animated movies i watch first!

5) Jared Leto

A Cackling, maniacal, unhinged version of the Clown Prince of Crime, is for me neither threatening, unpredictable or interesting, was this the fault of Leto and his weird behavior behind the scenes or the poor job David Ayer did at directing Suicide Squad, now i am well aware that this movie had a lot of interference by the studio and they forced the production of the movie through leaving script was not finished or if Leto himself just does not get the character, I don't know but hopefully his standalone Joker movie we're getting will address the issues and allow Leto to give a rounded performance.

Best Moment:
Unfortunately when he wasn't on screen.......

4) Cesar Romero

Visually, very similar to the Silver Age version of the Joker, Maniacal, Mischievous and Entertaining but again, none threatening, and very very predictable, though this is not the fault of Romero this was the portrayal of a show designed for kids, full of 64 different varieties off cheese he was not required to be the menacing adversary to Batman that he was in the comic books, but i grew up watching this show so Romero is awesome!

Best Moment:
who could forget the Crown Prince of Surfing?

3) Jack Nicholson

Wow, this shows the caliber of the entries in this list above this one, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of The Joker was surprising, intimidating, at times hilarious and proved a worthy opponent to Michael Keaton's Batman, creating truly dark and disturbing version, when i was a kid and watched this version for the first time he was quite scary, he should have been given a second movie and it was a shame after The Penguins outing in Batman Returns that we had to endure Joel Schumacher's Batman movies......

Best Moment

Jokers rampage through the Art gallery is both intense funny and menacing!

2) Mark Hamill

What can we say about Mark Hamill, for me his version of the Joker is the most prevalent in my mind, I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series and i'm also a fan of the Arkham series of Batman video games so for me Hamill's voice will always be the voice i associate with the Clown Prince of Crime,  it portrays a confident, intimidating character who is menacing, threatening and most importantly funny, but also in the case of Harley Quinn, Hamill crafted a side to the joker, not seen before, tenderness, this humanises the Joker, making him more believable giving him the most important trait I think the Joker has, unpredictability.

Best Moment:
Jokers monologue as he is dragged into Arkham Asylum in the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game

1) Heath Ledger

How can you describe this performance, gritty, raw, disturbing and realistic.  This version of the Joker has a permanent smile etched into his face from ear to ear, but without an explanation why, The Joker remains mysterious, just as he is in the comic books, The Batman never really knows who he is (until a recent comic book). Ledger portrays the character as truly unhinged, driven by no other purpose except to cause mayhem, he is not drawn by money, power or influence, only to be locked forever in a battle of wills with Batman, The performance is truly spectacular and yes the scene where Alfred sees the Joker for the first time in Bruce Wayne's apartment is genuinely real, he had never seen Heath Ledger in character before and was really disturbed by what he saw, and Michael Caine was in Jaws The Revenge, he knows disturbing.

Best Moment.
The brutal interrogation scene between Batman and Joker.

And thats our list, tell us what you think below and don't forget to recommend which Batman animated movies i watch first to get me up to speed
